A rare and fascinating feature of water: its “information.”

One of the most important—and one might almost say the most unusual—characteristics of water is its “memory” and its ability to store and pass on certain kinds of information. For various periods of time, scientists and other schools of thought have been concerned with exactly this question: To what extent can water be not only a chemical substance, but also a kind of carrier of information?

In this context, a recurring idea appears: not only conventional environmental influences should act on water, but also words, music, and sounds, energy, thoughts—and even ideas. The underlying notion is that certain influences could change the state of the water and thereby affect its properties in such a way that it can “transmit” information.

From structure to effect: what is allegedly happening on the molecular level

All these factors are said to make it possible to influence the overall structure of the “living liquid”—that is, water—on the molecular level. At this point, the Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto is often mentioned. He is said to have checked these claims using a microscope with an integrated camera and special photographic methods in order to make water structures—especially after freezing—visible.

According to these depictions, water from different places has a different crystalline structure. Emoto is said to have found many differences in the crystal form of the samples, depending on where the water came from and under what conditions it was obtained.

So the popular result is as follows: pure water from mountain rivers, natural springs, or underground sources should be geometrically and “correctly” structured, whereas equivalents from polluted regions, from contaminated waters, and from stagnant reservoirs are said to show a strongly disturbed structure.

Why “good” water is allegedly supposed to strengthen the body

This is then used to infer: anyone who drinks water from an ecologically natural source receives a boost of life force—a state of alertness and energy. In this line of reasoning, this kind of “energy” is supposed to distribute throughout the body and penetrate down to individual cells.

It is also claimed that high-quality water has no “memory” of bad additives, poisonous substances, and contaminants.

What is allegedly disrupting the natural structure

On the other hand, technical or unnatural influences—such as circulation/heating pumps, electromagnetic fields, the constant experience of high pressure, and chemical contaminants not originating from nature—are said to negatively affect and strongly distort water’s natural structure, so that the “normal” state of the liquid becomes unnatural.

Even if the water is cleaned later, its condition is not supposed to be restored to 100%: the molecules are said to “remember” earlier contamination and preserve this harmful information in their structure.

Can the “memory” be erased again?

According to these accounts, water can “regain” its original properties only through heating—evaporation followed by returning as precipitation—or through freezing—followed by thawing.

In both cases, the water is said to be able to reach its initial qualities again—provided that it was truly clean in the first place.
